WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The Winston-Salem State Rams ushered in a new era for their men's basketball team Monday.
Chancellor Elwood L. Robinson and Director of Athletics Tonia Walker introduced Cleo Hill Jr. as WSSU's ninth head basketball coach.
The school made the announcement in a news conference at Bowman Gray Stadium.
Hill, who is the son of WSSU legend Cleo Hill Sr., last coached at Shaw University from 2008 to 2015. He led the Bears to a 116-67 record in his time in Raleigh. He also led Shaw to its first CIAA championship in 2011 as well as an appearance in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region Tournament.
Before coaching at Shaw, Hill coached for five seasons at Cheyney University, where he finished with a 55-67 record and led the Wolves to two NCAA Division II playoffs.
Hill's ties to North Carolina basketball also include his playing days. He played at North Carolina Central University, where he is still among the school's all-time leading scorers.
Hill replaces former WSSU head coach James Wilhelmi who led the Rams to a 47-63 record in his four seasons in Winston-Salem.
