CARY, N.C. — The Wake Forest men's soccer team earned its fourth ACC Tournament championship Sunday with a win over Clemson in penalty kicks Sunday afternoon at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary.
The Demon Deacons and Tigers were tied 1-1 after regulation and extra time. Wake Forest was able to come out of the shootout victorious after eight high-intensity rounds.
Wake Forest fell behind Clemson, 1-0, in Sunday's match, but it was able to equalize in the 39th minute on a goal by redshirt sophomore Nico Rabiu — the first of his college career.
In the penalty shootout, both teams made all their shots through the first three rounds and the fourth attempts were both unsuccessful. In the eighth round, sophomore Jose Perez made the Deacons seventh and final penalty. The game ended when the final Clemson attempt went high over the bar.
Wake Forest graduate defender Prince Amponsah was named the ACC Tournament MVP. He made his 81st career start Sunday, tied for the ninth-most in Deamon Deacons history with Craig Conger (1989-91).
This was Wake Forest's first ACC Tournament title since 2017.
