GREENSBORO, N.C. — For 23 of the past 24 years, ACC women's basketball has called the Greensboro Coliseum Complex home.
Recently, ACC commissioner Jim Phillips hinted at the possibility that the women's tournament might not always be held in Greensboro.
"We are in a new home, as well in Charlotte. We want to take advantage of this world-class city. What you're going to see this Fall is an announcement that will take us over the next 3-4 years with our basketball tournaments as well as our Olympic sports," Phillips said.
The Greensboro Sports Foundation said Greensboro is still relevant to the ACC. He said negotiations are ongoing to have several ACC championships in Greensboro over the next 5 to 7 years.
"We are aware of their mindset and where they want to take these championships," President Richard Beard said, "We look forward to continuing that relationship with the ACC knowing that every now and then they will move to another location."
WFMY News 2 asked him about the local impact of the ACC Women's Basketball Tournaments. Beard said over 60,000 people attend every year and brings in about $3.5- $4 million annually.
He's said he's confident in Greensboro's ability to prove just how good it is at hosting tournaments.
"I think it's healthy for them to go to another location. We have the utmost confidence that we do it better than in any location in the country," Beard said.
The Greensboro Coliseum will host three ACC championships in 2024 including, Swimming and Diving, Women's Basketball, and Women's Gymnastics.
