91-year-old former NC State basketball player thinks the Wolfpack will bring home the national title

Vic Molodet helped lead the Wolfpack men's team in the 50s to three consecutive ACC Championship titles.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Former NC State basketball player 91-year-old Vic Molodet said the 2024 men's team has it all together this year, and he's confident they can win it all.

Molodet attended NC State from 1952 to 1955.

He was a starting guard for the basketball team and led the Wolfpack to three back-to-back ACC championship titles.

“I was at 82% (from the free throw line) and I still hold the record 17 consecutive free throws in one ball game that still holding at the school,” Molodet explained.

The first title brought home of the three was the first ever for the school's program.

He said, “I had a jump shot; I had to drive in. I had an extremely great hook for a small man, so I had an arsenal of my own.”

Molodet was even named the ACC MVP his senior year.

“I guess the moment I really enjoyed the most was my final of the ACC tournament 1955 when I was the MVP, and I really really enjoyed that ball game because I had a big night. I think it was 32 points. Today, they think that’s a big deal. Well, it is,” Molodet explained.

WFMY New's 2's Amber Lake talked to him about his time playing ball and his thoughts on the team's run this year.

“Let’s hope that they can do the trick. At least I will pull for them; I know everybody else is. I don’t think you can consider them a Cinderella team anymore. They’ve proven to you they know how to play basketball.”

As a retired basketball player, Molodet knows the pressure put on players to bring home a win and believes this team can do it.

“They really have it together. The coach has them together. They just look really good, and they are playing as a team. They have a good ball club. I just hope it’s only two more to go, and it’s going to be a lot of pressure.”

After his collegiate career, Molodet played a year with the Celtics, playing beside Bob Cousy and Bill Russell.

Molodet says he has been inducted into the Hall of Fame in Indiana, North Carolina, and will be inducted into the NC State Hall of Fame on April 20th.

He's donating one of these old state sweaters to be hung in the NC State Athletics Walk of Fame museum in Raleigh.
