LaMelo Ball buys Cam Newton's Uptown condo for $2.47 million

Ball has reportedly leased the property since 2020 under a "handshake agreement" that he'd eventually buy it.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte Hornets star LaMelo Ball is the new owner of the Uptown condo that was owned by former Panthers quarterback Cam Newton, Mecklenburg County property records show.

Ball's MB1 Enterprises paid $2.47 million on May 15 for the 3,300-square-foot apartment at 139 South Tryon Street. The property was managed by Newton's Agape Property Management Group LLC, which is led by Cecil Newton, Cam Newton's father. The condo is in the exclusive Trust building, where former Hornets owner Michael Jordan once had a residence.

News of the sale was first reported by the Charlotte Business Journal, which also reported that Ball has leased the property from Newton since 2020. County records show that Newton purchased the property for $2.1 million in 2015. Atlanta-based realtor Pierre Reeves told the Charlotte Business Journal that Ball leased the condo with a "handshake agreement" that he'd buy it from Newton when he was ready.

Last summer, Ball signed a five-year contract that keeps him in Charlotte through the 2028-29 season. Should Ball make an All-NBA team at any time during the contract, he will make $260 million total. If not, the deal is reportedly worth $203 million.

Ball has been a cornerstone of the Hornets franchise since he was drafted No. 3 overall in 2020. He earned Rookie of the Year honors during his first season but has been limited by injuries since. Ball only played in 22 games last season due to a right ankle injury. He's played in just 58 of a possible 164 games over the last two years.
