Meeting To Discuss Renaming Aycock Street

Greensboro is holding an open house to discuss renaming all or a portion of Aycock Street and Westover Terrace.

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The city of Greensboro is holding an open house next week to discuss renaming all or a portion of Aycock Street and Westover Terrace.

The street was named after Charles Aycock, the state's governor from 1901 to 1905. Aycock was a leader in public education, but he was also a leading spokesman for white supremacy and segregation.

Greensboro City Council is considering a proposal to rename Aycock Street as Josephine Boyd Street. Boyd was the first African-American to go to Grimsley High School.

The open house to discuss renaming Aycock Street is Wednesday, December 13 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. It's at the Old North State Boy Scout Council Office at 1405 Westover Terrace.
