Sports world reacts to death of former Tar Heel Eric Montross

Former players and big names in the sports community are reacting to the news of Eric Montross' death.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. β€” Members of the sports world are reacting to the death of former Tar Heel basketball player Eric Montross.

Montross died Sunday at the age of 52 after a battle with cancer, his family confirmed. 

Montross cemented his legacy with Carolina basketball in the early 1990s. He played under head coach Dean Smith and led the Tar Heels to an NCAA Tournament victory in 1993. He served as a UNC analyst for 20 years 

Several big names in the sports world are remembering Montross. 

ESPN analyst Dick Vitale said Montross was one of the nicest people he'd ever met in his basketball journey. 

The Boston Celtics drafted Montross in the first round of the 1994 NBA draft. The team shared condolences. 

Former NC State star player Chris Corchiani shared his condolences in a post. Corchiani was a senior at NC State when Montross was a freshman. 

Former teammate Derrick Phelps was on the 1993 NCAA Title team with Montross. 

ESPN personality and former Duke basketball player Jay Bilas also shared his thoughts.
