March Madness and sports betting

Legal online sports betting started in North Carolina over a week ago.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Legal sports betting started just over a week ago.

Some sports fans tell WFMY News 2 they are excited to place their bets.

Our team visited two sports bars in Greensboro: Duke's Pub and Tailgators Bar and Billiards.

Some sports fans told us they are fanatics.

"{I} love sports all the way," Mack Duke said, "Football and I love basketball as well."

"I actually lived in L.A. for four years and if UNC makes it to L..A. I am so going to be there," Christy Davidson recalled.

Several Duke fans at Duke's Pub were glued to the tv. Some patrons said they have already started placing their bets online.

"Sometimes you align with your bets and sometimes you don't," Duke said.

While some patrons have more experience, some said sports betting is foreign.

"I haven't tried yet, and I'm not very familiar with that landscape," Davidson said, "I'm open."

One patron at Tailgators Bar and Billiards said she is supporting her family's favorite team.

"We are a Tar Heel family," Carla Harris said, "I just go for who they tell me to go for and they said Tar Heel."

Those who are more familiar with sports betting said they are making sure to play responsibly.

"I think for someone who is wagering money on something, it is important to be reminded on what you can be responsible for," Duke said.

To place a legal wager online, you must register with one of eight licensed providers and be 21-years-old.

Responsible game play is advised.
