NC State quarterback Grayson McCall announces retirement from football

McCall was stretchered off the field earlier this season after taking a vicious hit to the head.

RALEIGH, N.C. — North Carolina State quarterback Grayson McCall announced that he is retiring from playing football on his Instagram on Wednesday night.

McCall, who transferred to N.C. State from Coastal Carolina after spending five years with the Chanticleers, played in just four games this season while dealing with multiple injuries.

He last played October 5 against Wake Forest. In that game, McCall suffered a head injury and had to be stretchered off the field after taking a vicious hit from a Demon Deacon defender.

"Unfortunately, my dream has been cut just short," McCall said in an Instagram post. As you all know I have battled injuries my whole career, but this is one that I cannot come back from."

McCall had a history of head injuries even before the game against Wake Forest. His final season at Coastal Carolina was cut short after taking a blow to the head in a game against Arkansas State.

The quarterback had to be hospitalized on both occasions.

"As I feel like my whole world is being taken from me, I feel some sense of contentment," McCall said. "Every time my feet hit the grass, I left every single ounce of myself on that field. I always played my hardest and to the best of my ability because I never knew what play would be my last."

McCall was a two-star prospect out of Porter Ridge High School in Indian Trail when he signed with Coastal Carolina ahead of the 2019 season.

During his time at Coastal Carolina, McCall threw for 10,005 yards and 88 touchdowns across 42 games. In his four games with N.C. State, McCall threw for 518 yards and three touchdowns against two interceptions.

McCall said he plans to move into coaching.
