BURLINGTON, N.C. -- The Elon University Baseball team is hitting a home run against cancer all while helping one of their own.
Not anyone on the baseball team, but for number 22 of the Women’s Soccer Team. That’s Nicole Dennion known as Colie. The 20-year-old, sophomore student is fighting Ewing’s Sarcoma, a rare form of cancer.
Thursday nights under the lights game against Richmond took on a special meaning after the game when the team shaved their heads.
Chase Jones, founder and CEO of the Vs. Cancer Foundation said, “Nicole is literally living day to day to beat this thing, all we can do is do everything possible to help her and the next person because I don't know what to do other than fight.”
Colie said she is fighting everyday to beat cancer, "As a 20-year-old, college student who just had an amazing soccer season as a sophomore, that's something that you never think will come into your life."
The team wore Colie’s special number.
“To see all of them wearing the number 22 on their back, it's just, it's emotional but it means so much,” said Colie.
This is the fifth year Elon’s head shaving event has helped cancer. The event has helped raised more than $80,000 toward fighting cancer. The team raised more than $42,000 that will go directly to helping Colie’s clinical trials. It also benefits the Vs. Cancer Foundation.
The Vs. Cancer Foundation was started by former University of North Carolina baseball player and childhood cancer survivor Chase Jones, the nephew of former Elon head coach Rick Jones.
