WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Wake Forest football head coach Dave Clawson has announced his resignation, effective immediately, after an 11-season tenure that redefined the program’s success and established him as a transformative leader in college football.
Clawson, who took over the program in 2014, led the Demon Deacons to unprecedented heights, including seven consecutive bowl appearances (2016–2022), an Atlantic Division title in 2021, and consecutive top-10 national rankings in 2021 and 2022. Known for his commitment to excellence both on and off the field, he departs as the most successful coach in Wake Forest history.
Clawson is regarded as the most successful football coach in Wake Forest football history for leading the demon deacons to 7 of their 17 bowl game appearances.
A Legacy of Success
During Clawson’s time at the helm, Wake Forest achieved a record-breaking 11–3 season in 2021, earning Clawson ACC Coach of the Year honors. Under his leadership, the team posted significant victories over ACC and SEC opponents, cultivated numerous NFL-caliber players, and set school records for wins, attendance, and academic performance.
Clawson is also the only coach to achieve 10-win seasons at four Division I programs: Fordham, Richmond, Bowling Green, and Wake Forest. His players earned 62 All-ACC honors since 2019, while alumni like Sam Hartman shattered ACC records and advanced to NFL careers.
Clawson’s Statement
“Coaching at Wake Forest has been the honor of my career,” Clawson said. “Together, we achieved things many thought impossible. This chapter is ending, but my pride in what we’ve built will never fade. The timing is right for me and my family to step away into this new role within Wake Forest University.”
Clawson will remain at Wake Forest as a Special Advisor to Athletics Director John Currie, assisting with the program's continued development.
Next Steps
The university has launched a national search for the next head coach, with a focus on maintaining the momentum and culture established during Clawson’s tenure. Currie emphasized that the well-being of current student-athletes will remain a top priority throughout the transition.
Clawson departs after 25 years as a head coach and 36 years in college football, leaving a lasting legacy at Wake Forest and beyond.
