Cummings Cavaliers honor fallen teammate #63 by scoring 63 points in a win over Graham

In their first game since the tragic passing of #63 Malik Mebane, the Cummings Cavaliers honor him by scoring 63 points.

BURLINGTON, N.C. — On Monday, September 23rd, 15-year-old Malik Mebane collapsed during football practice at Hugh M. Cummings High School in Burlington, NC.

According to Alamance-Burlington Schools, once EMS arrived at the scene, Mebane was rushed to the hospital and was later pronounced dead.

Mebane was a member of the program's Junior Varsity team, however, the next varsity game was supposed to be held on Friday the 27th, but with a mix of bad weather and the tragic loss of Mebane, the game against Graham, was postponed until Monday, September 30th.

Before kickoff on Monday, the school honored Mebane and his family with two framed #63 jerseys as well as a moment of silence before kickoff. However, Mebane's teammates had something even more special in store.

During the game, the Cavaliers, who entered Week 6 with a 4-1 record had their way with a struggling Graham side. However,  what the Cavaliers did on Monday night couldn't be anything other than divine intervention. The Cavaliers made their way up and down the field all night long, and when the final buzzer sounded in the 4th quarter, the final score was 63-0.

With the win, the Cavaliers move to 5-1 on the season and will play Chatham Central in week 8, after a bye this upcoming Friday.
