DURHAM, N.C. — Around the Triad, we like to say Duke/North Carolina is the biggest rivalry in sports.
But is Duke/UNC basketball bigger than the Super Bowl? The ticket prices might suggest it is.
As of 7 a.m., the cheapest ticket on popular ticket resell site for Wednesday night's game on StubHub is going for $3,088. Seakgeek.com says the average Super Bowl ticket costs between $2,500 and $3,000. The most expensive seats for Duke/UNC on StubHub are going for more than twice as much at $6,255.71.
Most ticket industry insiders cite Duke freshman Zion Williamson, widely regarded as the nation's most exciting player, as the reason for the booming market. There's also the fact that Duke's Cameron Indoor Stadium only seats 9,314.
This matchup is so big that former President Barack Obama might even attend, according to Duke's student newspaper, The Chronicle. Duke freshman RJ Barrett couldn't believe it when he was told Obama might attend.
"Man, that's amazing," Barrett said. "There's going to be a lot of people at the game as always and if he comes up, I'm going to be very excited."
Duke is ranked No.1 in this week's AP poll and UNC is ranked eighth. You can catch the game on WFMY News 2 at 9 p.m.
