GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Expectations aren't always high for teams in their first season, but the Carolina Cobras shattered all expectations Monday, beating the Columbus Lions 66-8 in the National Arena League Championship.
The Cobras, in their inaugural season, hosted the title game at the Greensboro Coliseum.
Carolina didn't waste any time getting on the scoreboard Monday. On the third play of the game, quarterback Charles McCullum found Phillip Barnett in the end zone for a 4-yard touchdown.
From that point, the Cobras never looked back.
In the first half, McCullum threw for three more touchdowns and rushed for a score, as the Cobras took a 37-2 lead into halftime.
In the end, Carolina would continue to pile on and defeat Columbus 66-8 to claim the 2018 National Arena League title on their home turf.
"Our guys came in motivated," said Cobras coach Billy Back. "We felt a little disrespect in the All-League Awards. So, our guys had to prove a point, remind this league that this is the best team, this is the best offense, this is the best defense in the league."
The Cobras finish their inaugural season with a 12-5 record.
