Sophomore Zayden High off UNC basketball team, not enrolled at university

The sophomore forward appeared in 23 games for the Tar Heels last season.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — A member of last year's North Carolina men's basketball team is no longer on the team or enrolled at UNC-Chapel Hill, according to a statement put out by the program Tuesday afternoon.

High, a 6-foot-9 and 225-pound forward from Rockwall, Texas, played in 23 games for the Tar Heels during the 2023-24 season, but he was limited to just 103 total minutes while sitting behind Armando Bacot and Jalen Washington. He was expected to take on a larger role this season, but that will obviously no longer be the case.

A four-star recruit, High was ranked inside the top 100 of the Class of 2023 and was one of two UNC true freshman to earn playing time last season along with guard Elliot Cadeau.

With High off the roster, UNC has a hole in the frontcourt it will need to fill before the start of the season. UNC has a few veterans it could turn to in Washington and Jae'Lyn Withers, as well as incoming freshmen Drake Powell and James Brown.

Transfers Cade Tyson, Ven-Allen Lubin and Tyzhaun Claude are also expected to contribute.

Head coach Hubert Davis' team opens the 2023-24 season Nov. 4 at home against Elon.
