GREENSBORO, N.C. — North Carolina schools serve as a pipeline for some of the top talent in the MLB. This year, it's no different as the first round of the 2024 MLB draft begins on Sunday.
Chase Burns. a pitcher from Wake Forest is projected to hear his name called first as MLB has him listed as the seventh-best prospect. The Demon Deacons pitching ace had a phenomenal junior year, leading all pitchers in the NCAA with 191 strikeouts, 30 more than any other pitcher. A consistent theme about Burns around the league is that he will be a hard-throwing potential MLB ace.
Coming in at the number 8 spot in MLB.com's top-20 2024 Draft prospects, you'll find another Wake Forest Demon Deacon, First baseman Nick Kurtz. Kurtz has been one of the best hitters in college baseball over the last two seasons. The powerful slugger from the left side ended 2024 with 22 home runs, 14 of which, Kurtz hit in a nine-game span, which included at least one home in seven consecutive games.
The next best prospect is Wake third baseman, Seaver King at 17. His skill sets are similar to a player like Mookie Betts. King's athleticism and speed make him such a versatile player that teams can place him anywhere on the infield. Pairing his defensive mind plus his power at the plate easily makes him a top-20 pick.
The ACC Defensive Player of the Year, Vance Honeycutt is projected to be the 22nd pick in the 2024 MLB Draft. The outfielder is arguably the most talented player on the board in the 2024 MLB draft. He has the speed on defense and power at the plate, which allowed him to crush 28 home runs this season.
