GREENSBORO, N.C. — It's time for 'My 2 Cents.'
The average American adult spends about two hours a day on social media according to Statista. That's two hours of scrolling, checking, updating... and unfortunately comparing. Social media can easily turn into the green eyed monster making the most confident person self conscious. But folks, let's just tell it like it is.
Social media is fake.
First, it's not the full picture. You see a small sliver of a big story. If you zoomed out of that perfect post - you'd see more of the real.
Second, it's filtered. People's faces are that smooth, their lighting isn't that perfect, that pose isn't comfortable. There are countless photo editing apps in your app store. They call themselves all kinds of things - Face Tune, Selfie Editor, Skinny App. (Don't get me started on that last one.)
All of this to saw - what you see online is not always what you get so don't get sucked in. I talk a big talk, but know that I fall into this pretty often.
I start comparing myself to what I see even though I know it's not always a genuine representation and we do that for more than 2 hours a day.
So this is your reminder, you are enough, this isn't a competition, it's okay to have days and moments that you never want anyone else to see, and it's also okay to share the times you feel your best.
You don't have to keep up the Joneses on social media.
