GREENSBORO, N.C. — Covid was terrible in so many ways. Is still terrible. But through it all, there was something positive that came out of it for me: I’m buying less stuff.
Being stuck at home all that time made me realize how jammed-packed my house is with things I hardly ever use. Items I was so excited to buy and then quickly forgot about because they got stuck down in the back of a cabinet or fell in the back of the closet.
Being at home, forced to see that mess all the time, I started feeling suffocated by it. Everywhere I looked, stuff was translating to dollar signs in my mind. Wasted money.
Instead of living my dreams of traveling the world, I had spent away on new shirts, tools I used once, or other extras for the house.
It made me realize, I don’t need more things. I need more memories with friends and family. That’s why for the first time ever I have not bought a single item during Black Friday or Cyber Monday. I don’t miss it.
Sure, there are items we need in life. And it’s great to get them when they are on sale. But before I purchase something from now on, I’m asking myself: is this something I’ll still use in a year? If not, I’m skipping over it and investing that money chasing my dreams instead.
