Send a letter in the mail this week - My 2 Cents

When's the last time you sent something in the mail? WFMY News 2's Maddie Gardner explains why handwritten notes mean more.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — It's time for 'My 2 Cents.'

When's the last time you wrote a letter or sent something - other than a bill - in the mail? I have to tell you, it had been quite a while for me. So long I truly can't remember the last time, until last week.

I had some people to thank and instead of sending a text or an email, I broke out my stationery and penned a letter. It took more time and effort, between carefully scripting each word, getting stamps, and running it to the mailbox. But that's what makes it more meaningful.

Don't get me wrong, I love the convenience of email. I can quickly type something out and get it to its recipient instantly. It's free, I don't have to run an errand to send it and if I make a mistake, I just backspace rather than grabbing the White Out or starting over completely.

But it's the effort that matters.

Letters are superior - they are more likely to get opened, they leave a lasting impression, they're rare so they seem more valuable, they set you apart from others, they can be saved easily, they bring a personal touch to show you care and pretty much everyone appreciates a handwritten letter.

It takes more time but good things do.

So maybe instead of sending an email this week, take some time and write out your thoughts. I guarantee the person who gets your note, will appreciate it.
