Representation matters and it's happening now more than ever - My 2 Cents

What kids see in pop culture and the media affects how they see themselves. It’s powerful and sends a message that everybody has a place in the world.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — It’s time for ‘My 2 Cents.’

I’m really happy to be living in a time of so much representation. A time where kids see people who look like them in all kinds of positions – especially ones where they didn’t in the past.

Just today Jennifer King was named assistant running backs coach for The Washington Football Team. This makes her the first African American female assistant position coach in NFL history – only the second female assistant coach in the league after Tampa Bay’s defensive line coach, Lori Locust.

How cool is it that girls will watch football games and see women leading on the sidelines?

What kids see in pop culture and the media affects how they see themselves. It’s powerful and sends a message that everybody has a place in the world. While there is always room for improvement - we are seeing more representation than ever.

Politics aside – the Vice President of the United States is a woman for the first time – and she’s also the first black, Asian-American woman to hold the office. Women, girls and people of color across the country now know it’s possible for them to be in the White House.

Chadwick Boseman showed kids everywhere that anyone, no matter race or ethnicity, could be a superhero with the box office hit, Black Panther.

Diverse casts on television shows, representation on leadership teams in companies – it all matters.

I’m so excited to see what’s happening in our world. I’m excited that my nieces will get to grow up and not just be told they can be anything they want to be, but believe it and see it.

Representation matters.
