GREENSBORO, N.C. — It's time for my '2 cents.'
Service and sacrifice.
They are two profound words, etched into the hearts of veterans -- 150,000 of whom, the War Memorial Foundation says, call the Triad home. These heroes have made a lifelong commitment to our country, so our show of appreciation should not be limited to one day -- Veterans Day.
Our community knows constant support is critical to veterans' success. From the Veterans Bridge Home 'Veterans Appreciation Day' gathering in the summer...to the 'Veterans Recognition Event' in the fall, we celebrate the veterans who share their stories and invest in the next generation -- helping new veterans find jobs and emotional support.
In the winter, we reverently honor the fallen, as Wreaths Across Greensboro pays tribute to the ultimate sacrifice. Year-round, Winston-Salem's Whole Man Ministries builds homes to help veterans out of homelessness, and Greensboro's Purple Heart Homes makes needed house repairs for veterans wounded in combat.
Amid all the hard work stands a quiet place of reflection -- the Carolina Field of Honor -- where each flag, each brick, call us all to pay tribute.
I have had the immense honor of interviewing veterans over the years, from World War II to the Global War on Terror. Each of these heroes embodies the same sense of selfless devotion to our freedom and the same humility about their service. Veterans don't ask for praise, though they deserve it 100-fold.
Thank you to our veterans...and the military families, who serve right alongside them. You are heroes in the truest sense of the word.
That's my '2 Cents.'
Sincerely,
Meghann
