Let's bring back civil discussion | My 2 Cents

After seeing an exchange on Twitter, WFMY News 2's Maddie Gardner reflects on nice conversations.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — It's time for 'My 2 Cents.'

I came across a post on Twitter this week. It detailed a conversation between a woman and a contractor who came to do some work at her house. She says she casually asked him if he had been vaccinated, because her family had, and he told her he had not. The tweet goes on to say that the two people had a calm, constructive conversation about why she chose to get vaccinated and he hadn't yet. There was no judgement, there was no argument, there was just civil discussion.

Now let me just say, this shouldn't be shocking. We shouldn't be surprised that people can talk about hot topics without it becoming a knock-down-drag-out fight to end all fights. All conversations should be respectful.

But we all know that isn't always the case.

People have strong opinions about many topics - and just as many people disagree with those opinions. That is inevitable.

But what if we didn't yell or scream or fight or post rude comments on social media to people who you didn't see eye-to-eye with? What if we calmly explained your point and listened to the opposing opinion? What if instead of trying to make sure only our voice was heard, we took time to listen and understand why someone feels differently?

How you present your side says more about you than it does your opinion. Be kind. Be civil. Be understanding.
