GREENSBORO, N.C. — It's time for my "2 Cents."
On this Labor Day, let's delve into a concept circulating social media about the labor force -- specifically women who work for a paycheck. It's called #LazyGirlJob, a now-viral term prompting national conversations about work-life balance.
In her original video, TikToker Gabrielle Judge described a "lazy girl job" as an "anti-hustle," non-technical position that brings in a comfortable salary, has flexible hours and allows the employee to work remotely in a safe environment. The employee can pay bills yet not feel tired at the end of the day.
Sure, I certainly can understand why many women might find these positions appealing. However, it is the term 'lazy girl' I am having trouble grasping, particularly because it perpetuates a gender stereotype that is anything but true -- especially for mothers. A 2018 study by Welch's found most moms, whether they work inside and/or outside the home, clock the equivalent of two-and-a-half full-time jobs.
I want my daughter to know she can pursue the same career paths her brother can. And, I'll tell both of my children what I think this 'lazy girl job' conversation is lacking -- the value of hard work.
Success takes time, and not every day will be easy or enjoyable. The challenging times prove you are stronger than you think you are. If you're losing your spark for a job you thought was your passion, I suggest sticking with it -- at least for a little while -- and seeing if you find fulfillment. If not, then yes, go elsewhere. Life is too short.
You are not lazy if you're fully "living" life. Sometimes, though, the journey takes a "labor" of love.
