Getting lost in the world of super fandom - My 2 Cents

WFMY News 2's Maddie Gardner admits she's a chronic super fan and loves to learn more about books, movies and TV shows.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — It’s time for ‘My 2 Cents.’

I am a chronic super fan. It feels good to finally admit it.

What I mean is that I get very into things – TV shows, movies, books – and I want to learn everything I possibly can about them.

I remember when it started. Fifth grade. Mrs. Bell’s class. I read the first Harry Potter book. I was hooked. I loved the characters, the magic, the storytelling, everything. Before I knew it I was dressing up in costume waiting for new books to be released at midnight and reading everything I could get my hands on about the franchise.

Then came Twilight, I know, it’s embarrassing but give me a break.

Grey’s Anatomy came next – I was certain I was going to be trauma surgeon after a couple of seasons. That quickly passed.

There was F.R.I.E.N.D.S., Gossip Girl, then Game of Thrones.

Now, it’s Marvel. I’m becoming a Marvel super fan. I know I’m late to the party but I got a Disney + subscription and virtually all of the movies and series are available for me to binge watch. But not only that, I’m reading fan theories, looking for Easter eggs, learning more about character origins, watching YouTube videos that break down each scene, it’s taking up a lot of time.

But it’s fun.

I’m not even close to being on the level some fans are at but it’s so fun to see how enthralled people are with make believe worlds. It’s an escape. I think right now is a perfect time to get away from the real world and enter a universe – or multiverse – of superheroes and good prevailing over evil.

We all need something to pour ourselves into, whether it’s a hobby, a book, a new show or hours worth of movies. Time to take our mind off of the stress of the world and enjoy the experiences of make believe characters for a bit.
