GREENSBORO, N.C. — As Hurricane Ian ripped up the east coast, I monitored every move on social media. For days I was scrolling and scrolling, and I just can't move past something I saw over and over again.
In the middle of mass devastation, folks kept playing politics. This is both sides of the aisle. There were thousands of tweets talking about how Florida Governor Ron DeSantis voted against Hurricane Sandy relief when he was in Congress. Considering that, people on Twitter asked if Florida deserved federal money to help. And there was just as much hate on the other side, for example, the man who flew the flag in the rain saying a curse word about President Joe Biden.
Don't get me wrong, politics is important. Holding the powerful accountable for their actions is a cornerstone of our democracy. I've built my career on that principle. But, there is a time and place for it.
The moment a powerful storm is putting people in danger and leaving behind death and destruction is not the right time. The first thought at that moment should always be: how can I help my neighbors – not someone did me wrong let's point it out and gloat.
We can and should talk about our differences once everyone is safe and sound. But first, we have to love each other a little more.
That's My 2 Cents.
