GREENSBORO, N.C. — It's time for 'My 2 Cents.'
You know, I truly thought we had moved past the denim debacle of 2021 but apparently we are still on it so I'm addressing it. I won't make you wait until the end of the segment - the point is wear whatever jeans you want.
There's a conversation online about generational differences when it comes to blue jeans. Gen Z - people born between 1997-2015 - say mom jeans, higher waists, wider cuts, are in. But that's not all, they're declaring skinny jeans 'out of style.'
The tapered denim of skinny jeans was introduced to the mass market in 2005. For that reason, the skintight, often stretchy pants are popular among Millennials born between 1981 and 1996. They've dominated the market for more than a decade. Everyone loved skinny jeans. They looked clean, were more comfortable than the stiff fabric of past designs and, other than the jumping up down we have to do to get them on, they were good to us.
Maybe the younger folks were just trying to let the older generation know what was coming on the scene - helping us stay hip - but Millennials aren't ready to have skinny jeans ripped from their tight grasps just yet. Instead they are fighting back trying to convince Gen Z that they know what they were doing.
Now, let's just all agree that low rise jeans from the early 2000's need to stay buried deep deep in the fashion archives and never return but when it comes to other jeans, do what you want. Whether you're rocking skinny jeans, mom jeans, ripped jeans or 80's jeans, does it really matter?
Wear what you are comfortable in, wear what makes you happy, wear what's out of style or in style or what never had style.
