GREENSBORO, N.C. — It's time for 'My 2 Cents.'
It's officially summer - and if you ask most people, they'll say it's their favorite season. But is it actually the best season or are we just conditioned to love it?
Stick with me.
My sister posed this very question to me the other day. A fall lover - she pondered if summer was all it's cracked up to be or if we are told from a young age that it's the time of year we are supposed to enjoy the most.
Think about it, as kids we were given the summer months off of school, we come to associate the time of year with vacation and fun. It was essentially our only time off for more than 12 years of our lives.
Would we prefer, say spring, if our break were then?
Summer actually comes with some downsides. First, it's really hot. Not nice, hot. So hot that your seatbelt burns you, you sweat when you aren't exercising, and the pavement radiates like the surface of the sun.
It's primetime for severe weather - thunderstorms, hurricanes, you name it.
The only sport is baseball - which, don't get me wrong is America's Pastime, but you have to sit outside and bake for hours and hours in a stadium.
Gas prices rise.
You're likely going to get sunburnt.
Okay, you say, there are fun frozen treats to enjoy... good luck finishing your ice cream cone before it melts your hand becomes stickier than a toddler's after playtime.
Oh, you want to go out and work on your yard? Better get up before the sun comes up or wait until it goes down.
You can't sleep in because the sun is up before 7 a.m.
I'm not telling you can't love summer - I'm just asking you to take a hard look at yourself and figure out if you actually like the season or if you've just been told that you're supposed it.
