GREENSBORO, NC -- What's the Earliest Snowfall in Triad History? It's a good question. In fact, some of you have seen snowplows out and about in Winston-Salem getting their practice runs in for the season yet to come.
The WFMY News 2 Weather Team looked back at our records to find out. As it turns out, there has never been an October snowfall here in the Piedmont. To look at the records, we'll break it down into two categories: snowflakes flying in the air and measurable snowfall (which must be at least a tenth of an inch).
Let's start with flakes in the air. In 1954, the climate records show a "trace" of snow on November 1st. A trace of snow means just some flurries that didn't really amount to much of anything on the ground.

For measurable snowfall, the earliest on record fell in 1968. On November 9th, PTI Airport recorded 0.8" of snow, almost an inch.
Overall, it's difficult to get much of any snowfall during the month of November, but it can happen. Just 15.9 inches of snow has fallen in Triad weather history during November in more than 100 years of record.
On the flip side, the latest snow in Triad history comes during the month of April. The latest measurable snow fell on April 8th, 1915 with 8". The latest flakes in the air came on April 24th, 1955.
