GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Greensboro Police have identified the man who was shot at an apartment complex near UNCG Sunday night.
The university's Spartan Alert system released a statement saying officers were looking for a suspect armed with a shotgun.
Police identified the victim as 21-year-old Jarad Steven Ramsey of Durham. He was shot inside an apartment building at the Campus Crossing complex on Milton Street.
Shocked, nervous, uncomfortable, and scared. Those are a few words that neighbors who live in the Campus Crossing complex used to describe their feelings on Monday -- just hours after the shooting took place.
Residents who live there, like Jenelle Brison and Will Indermaur say the scariest part is the fact that the shooter is still at large.
"I guess the word would be uneasy and unsure of what's going on in the neighborhood. Certainly, when things like that happen you can expect retaliation," said Brison. "I feel very uneasy about it because I have a dog. I walk out here to take him on walks at all the hours of the night -- sometimes 1 or 2 o'clock in the morning. So, I definitely would be more weary and careful of where I'm walking."
"This is normally a really safe neighborhood. It's a nice place, so I don't know why it happened here and hopefully it doesn't happen again," said Indermaur. "But I just hope people send information that they have to the cops so they can track him down because we don't need people like that running around."
According to a news release from the Greensboro Police Department, the victim tried to drive himself to the hospital moments after the shooting occurred. Police located the vehicle and initiated a traffic stop. EMS responded to Spring Garden Street and transported the victim to the hospital for treatment.
Lewis was listed in stable condition at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital as of Monday morning.
Police say the victim and the suspects knew each other. This was not a random act of violence.
Still, neighbors who live in Campus Crossing are being extra careful walking to and from their cars.
"I'll definitely walk around with pepper spray. One of my friends as a taser, I might need to look into getting one of those," said Indermaur. "I'll probably walk with my phone out just so I can make sure that I can call 911 if I need to right away."
Greensboro Police say they are looking for two suspects in connection to the shooting.
Authorities will continue to canvass the area where the shooting happened and interview witnesses.
