Duke Energy Smart Meter Door Hanger

The question we have, is it legit? WFMY News 2 set out to answer that question and here’s what we’ve discovered.

The number left on the flyer is for a third-party company called Grid-1-Solutions. They are the ones that actually install the smart meters for Duke Energy. The company said they’re partnering with Duke Energy and yes, this is a real deal.

If you get the flyer the company wants you to call them back so they can schedule a time to install the smart meters.

Duke Energy also said it will leave you a door hanger if they can’t access your meter to replace it. The following is provided by Duke Energy.

WHY SMART METERS?

Duke Energy is working to upgrade their grids and systems. Part of that includes installing smart meters.

WHAT ARE SMART METERS?

Smart meters provide two-way communication between your meter and Duke Energy, allowing you to take more control of your energy use.

SMART METER BENEFITS

Duke Energy says the smart meters will allow you to monitor more in detail your daily usage information through “ My Account.” You’ll also be able to start or stop service remotely without having to make an appointment. You’ll also get better response time and quicker repairs after an outage.

CAN YOU PURCHASE AND INSTALL OR REMOVE YOUR OWN METER?

No, it’s illegal and unsafe to do so. The Smart Meter is the property of Duke Energy. Improper handling of a meter can result in serious injury or death.

DO I HAVE TO BE HOME WHEN MY SMART METER IS INSTALLED?

No, you don’t have to be home as long as a technician can access your meter. If you’re not home and a technician cannot access your meter you will be given a door hanger with further instructions.
