UPDATE: 13 Tornadoes Hit North Carolina Friday

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Friday's tornado outbreak was one of the biggest on record in North Carolina. Thirteen tornadoes touched down across the state, ranking sixth all time for most tornadoes in a single day.

Most of the tornadoes were fairly weak. Of the 13 confirmed twisters, eight tornadoes ranked EF-1 strength, with winds of 86-110 mph. Four tornadoes ranked EF-0 strength, with winds less than 86 mph.

The strongest tornado was an EF-2 with 115 mph winds which hit Orange County. No one was killed, and only 1 injury was reported as of the writing of this report.

It was a long day of severe weather. The first tornado of the day hit around 10:30am in McDowell County; the last hit Northhampton County around 6:45pm.

According to the North Carolina State Climate Office, this was the busiest tornado day for the state since the record-breaking outbreak of April 16, 2011. A whopping 30 tornadoes touched down that day.

Here in the Triad, we didn't have any confirmed tornadoes, but there was still damage. Many downed trees were reported in Winston-Salem, Greensboro, and elsewhere in the Triad.
