A scare on the court for the Tar Heels and it wasn't over the score. UNC Head Coach Roy Williams collapsed during Tuesday night's game against Boston College.

He said Vertigo was to blame. So what is Vertigo?

Dr. Keith Willis from Guilford Neurologic Associates said Vertigo is actually a symptom of something else, it doesn't just occur on its own. "Vertigo can be part of a migraine aura, it can be part of a stroke syndrome sometimes, if it's a pure inner ear issue it is often times associated with severe nausea, vomiting, if it lasts long enough."

Dr. Willis said Vertigo is a feeling of the body moving when it's really not. If you have Vertigo it could come without warning and knock you to the ground.

"Inability to walk because you're so dizzy," said Willis. "Individuals oftentimes will have to close their eyes because everything looks like it's moving around and everything's blurred so it's uncomfortable to try to focus on something."

Coach Williams told reporters he suffers from Benign Positional Vertigo and has for nearly 2 decades.
Dr. Willis said this type is more common in older adults and is caused the same way it's treated, by head movements.

Coach Williams said he jerked his head suddenly while discussing a foul call with the referee causing the dizziness. "Benign Positional Vertigo, it may only last during the period of time that the person has their head in the position that brings it on," said Willis.

Depending on the cause of the Vertigo, cures vary from steroids to surgery.

Coach Williams and Marcus Paige talked about the dizzy spell after the game. "I was very concerned because I didn't want to be a distraction, but I'll be fine," said Williams.

"It's bad that that sort of thing would have to light a fire under us," said Paige. "We're playing for a lot these days but for whatever reason that kind of got us going."

Williams said every attack he's had occurred when he jerked his head quickly. He said this was the first time he's had an episode during a game.

Coach Williams' Vertigo spell was not the first health scare for an ACC coach this month.

Duke Coach Mike Krzyzewski did not travel with his team last week. Last week, Coach K stayed behind getting his heart tested when his team traveled to Georgia Tech. This week, it was Roy Williams and Vertigo.

The average age of the ACC men's basketball coaches is 56. The oldest is Syracuse's Jim Boeheim at 71, the youngest is Virginia Tech's Buzz Williams at 43.

Duke's Coach K is second oldest. He'll be 69 in three days. Roy Williams is 65.
