Tipster Tricked `Precious Doe' Suspect

He apparently convinced the child's mother to give him a hair sample for good luck. But he taped the hair to a photograph and sent it to Kansas City police.

Kansas City, MO -- The tipster who helped crack the "Precious Doe" case in Missouri is described as a clever, older man who tricked the child's mother into giving a hair sample. The headless body of a four-year-old girl was found in Kansas City back in 2001. Known only as "Precious Doe," the child has now been identified as Erica Green. Her mother and stepfather stand charged with her murder. A Kansas City community activist says the tipster went to police with his suspicions nearly a year ago, but had no proof. He then apparently convinced the child's mother to give him a hair sample for good luck. The tipster taped the hair to a photograph and sent it to Kansas City. Police would not comment on what role the hair sample may have played in the arrests. The tipster, who doesn't want his name released, is the grandfather of one of the people involved in the case.
