Swing Phi Swing Celebrates 50 Years With Monument Dedication At WSSU

“Now with the unveiling of this monument, it's now in the annals of the history of Winston-Salem State University,” said WSSU Chancellor Elwood L. Robinson. “You have your own place.”

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Fifty years ago, the Swing Phi Swing organization was founded on the campus of Winston-Salem College, now known as Winston-Salem State University.

In 1969, 12 students dared to start 'Swing Phi Swing Fellowship,’ which now has more than 50 chapters across the nation and thousands of members.

The founders of the organization returned to Winston-Salem State Saturday to celebrate the 50th anniversary and to dedicate a monument.

The monument was erected at the same spot where the organization first started in 1969.

The 10 living founders helped cut the ribbon on the monument that's located just outside C.G. O’Kelly Library.

“Now with the unveiling of this monument, it's now in the annals of the history of Winston-Salem State University,” said WSSU Chancellor Elwood L. Robinson. “You have your own place.”

The commemorative event was apart of Swing Phi Swing’s 50th-anniversary convention that brings hundreds of members from the organization to town including members of their brother organization Groove Phi Groove.

Earlier this week, Swing Phi Swing announced that it was giving back to its founding university with a $25,000 donation.

The donation will establish the Supporting Women In Need of Growth (SWING) Non-endowed Scholarship Fund, which will provide scholarships for women who demonstrate community service.
