GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Police have identified the victim shot and killed at a house party in Greensboro.

Investigators say they found 26-year-old Shawn Christopher Rorie shot after a crowd scattered from the party. Rorie later died at a hospital.

An officer was also forced to shoot a suspect who continued to shoot his weapon after the officer told him to drop it. Police say the suspect even pointed his gun at the officer.

Investigators say the suspect in the officer-involved shooting, Timothy Calvin Armstrong, has been treated and released from Moses Cone Hospital. He paid his bail Saturday night.  He's charged with Discharging a Firearm in the City Limits and Possession of a Stolen Handgun.

Greensboro police say the shooting happened at a large party near NC A&T State University.

Capt. Mike Richey with the Greensboro Police Department said the party was related to NC A&T's homecoming, though it was not an official school party. But, police say neither the suspect nor the person killed is an NC A&T student.

"A&T students and alumni have the right attitude," Richey said. "They're here for a festive occasion. And, I hate that it gets marred by gunfire that typically comes from out of town from individuals who aren't even in school, or aren't even alumni of the school."

It happened on Boyd Street around 2 a.m. Saturday, two hours after police say they responded to a noise complaint there.

Party promoter Phill Ellis helped organize the party. He says no one has ever fired a gun at one of his parties.

"We don't know who those people was at all," he said. "You know, we check security at the door, we search them, all of that."

Greensboro Police say Sgt. J.E. Armstrong had gone back to the house to check whether the noise had gone down. By that time, approximately 300 to 400 people were at the party. Police say when 48-year-old Sgt. Armstrong arrived, he heard shots fired. Police say he yelled at the shooter to drop the weapon, but the man kept firing. Police say in order to stop harm to others, Officer Armstrong then shot the shooter, hitting him once in his lower extremities.

As the crowd dispersed, police say they found a second man had been shot. EMS took him to the hospital, where police say he died.

Police identified the suspected shooter as 26-year-old Timothy Calvin Armstrong (no relation to the officer). He went to the hospital with what police say is not a life-threatening injury.

Officer Armstrong joined the Greensboro Police Department in 1991 and is assigned to Patrol Division 2. He's on administrative duties while the investigation continues.
