CHICAGO — Gov. Roy Cooper of North Carolina is slated to be among the final speakers before Vice President Kamala Harris accepts the Democratic presidential nomination on Thursday, Aug. 22.
Cooper was among the initial pool of a dozen individuals considered to be Harris' running mate but withdrew himself from consideration in late July.
North Carolina has become increasingly important as a purple state in the 2024 election cycle as candidates for both parties have made frequent visits.
Additionally, according to the Associated Press, North Carolina has ranked between 9th and 6th in the country for those searching how to register to vote in recent weeks.
Cooper said there's more optimism about Democrats' chances with Harris as the candidate, the Associated Press reported.
Before President Joe Biden dropped out, “Democrats were not united,” Cooper said. “I’m grateful for his decision to do that because it brought everybody together.”
