NC gubernatorial candidates comment on Trump attempted assassination

They each agreed that political violence can't be tolerated.

NORTH CAROLINA, USA — WFMY News 2 heard from both candidates for North Carolina governor on Wednesday, July 17 to get their perspectives on Former President Donald Trump's assassination attempt.

They each agreed that political violence can't be tolerated.

"There's been a lot of rhetoric from all sides and from every corner. I think one of the silver linings of this thing is it's gonna make everybody, when I say everybody, I'm including myself, the current president, the former president, all parties involved, the press, everyone's gonna have to really take a step back and really examine what we say," said Lt. Governor and Republican gubernatorial candidate Mark Robinson.

"We can not allow political violence to take root in this country, we have to use and be careful about the language in our public speaking," said North Carolina Attorney General and Democratic gubernatorial candidate Josh Stein. "In America, we settle our political differences with ballots and election booths not with bullets."

Each said they are grateful that Trump is okay after the shooting.

They stressed the importance of being able to share ideas freely, without fear of violence.
