NORTH CAROLINA, USA — One person from North Carolina is sick after the McDonald’s E. coli outbreak, according to the CDC.
The CDC said a total of 104 people have become sick across the United States, including one from North Carolina, in an update on Wednesday, Nov. 13.
34 people have been hospitalized and there has been one death reported, according to the CDC.
The CDC said they believe the slivered onions served on quarter-pounder hamburgers from McDonald’s made people sick. The onions from Taylor Farms were recalled, according to the CDC.
The CDC has said it is not necessary to avoid eating onions.
Data from the CDC shows most of the cases have been reported in the western and midwestern United States. Colorado had the highest amount of cases followed by Montana and Nebraska. There are 14 states that have reported at least one case, according to the CDC.
At least seven people who got sick said they ate McDonald's food while traveling, according to the Associated Press.
According to the CDC, symptoms of E. coli include the following:
Severe stomach cramps
Diarrhea (often bloody)
Vomiting
Fever
E. coli symptoms usually start three to four days after swallowing bacteria and most people recover without treatment after five to seven days, according to the CDC. The CDC said sometimes serious kidney problems may develop and may require hospitalization.
An investigation into the E. coli outbreak was launched by the CDC on Oct. 22. The CDC said it is likely there have been more people who have become sick but have not reported it.
