NC residents can legally order alcoholic drinks with to-go orders

Adults who are 21+ still have to show their ID and the law explicitly states the container must be sealed while driving.

NORTH CAROLINA, USA — Governor Roy Cooper signed a new bill that will allow NC customers to add an alcoholic drink to their to-go order, according to the NC General Assembly.

SB 527 will allow licensed establishments to sell to-go mixed drinks with the purchase of food. The bill also states that the drinks must be in a secured container.

The ease of taking your drink home doesn't change the rules to consume it.

Adults who are 21+ still have to show their ID and the law explicitly states the container must be sealed while driving. The bill states these rules also apply for delivery services, an option for some patrons told us works for a busy lifestyle.

SB 527 has made its way through the state legislature. It currently sits on Governor Roy Cooper's desk. He can choose to sign it or veto it.
