HICKORY, N.C. — FEMA has announced an extension for Hurricane Helene survivors utilizing its Transitional Sheltering Assistance (TSA) program. Initially authorized for 60 days until December 3, the program will now run through December 12, giving families additional time to secure long-term housing solutions or complete necessary home repairs.

FEMA is committed to reassessing the need for further extensions as housing plans evolve. Survivors are encouraged to collaborate with state agencies, local organizations, and long-term recovery groups to explore available resources.

Key Details:

  • Notifications: FEMA will inform participants three to seven days before their checkout dates via their chosen communication method (phone, text, or email) and their Disaster Assistance accounts.
  • Current Participation: As of November 25, 5,179 households remain checked into hotels. Out of 10,129 households initially housed, 4,950 have transitioned to long-term housing.

Eligibility Updates:

Participants may lose TSA eligibility for various reasons, including withdrawal from FEMA’s Individual Assistance program, missed inspections, or receiving duplicate aid or insurance payments.

FEMA also offers alternative housing programs for eligible survivors:

  1. Rental Assistance: Provides funds for temporary housing, including hotels or rentals, while homes are repaired.
  2. Direct Temporary Housing Assistance: Direct leasing, multifamily repairs, and temporary housing units are available in areas with housing shortages.

For more information or assistance, survivors can contact the FEMA Helpline at 800-621-3362 or visit DisasterAssistance.gov.
