NORTH CAROLINA, USA — The North Carolina Governor’s Highway Safety Program (GHSP) is urging all travelers to prioritize safety this Thanksgiving season by buckling up.
Partnering with the Mooresville Police Department, NASCAR driver Ross Chastain, and others, GHSP officially kicked off its statewide Click It or Ticket campaign this week at the North Carolina Auto Racing Hall of Fame.
From Nov. 25 to Dec. 1, law enforcement officers in all 100 counties will increase patrols to enforce seat belt compliance during the busy holiday travel period.
“Thanksgiving should be a time of togetherness, but for some families, it brings tragedy,” said GHSP Director Mark Ezzell. “Last year, 495 unbuckled passengers lost their lives in North Carolina, including five here in Iredell County.”
Failure to wear a seat belt in North Carolina can lead to fines of up to $187.
Beyond the legal risks, Mooresville Police Chief Campurciani emphasized the devastating personal consequences, sharing a recent case where a young boy lost his older brother in a crash.
Chastain, a NASCAR driver and safety advocate, lent his voice to the cause, highlighting the importance of seat belts.
“As a driver, I rely on seat belts to protect my life. If this message inspires just one person to buckle up, it’s worth it,” Chastain said.
The Click It or Ticket campaign is another step toward safer roads, ensuring families reach their holiday destinations safely.
