Booze it and lose it: NC cracking down on drunk driving during Fourth of July holiday

Four people died from crashes connected to alcohol during the Fourth of July holiday last year, according to crash data.

RALEIGH, N.C. — Law enforcement statewide will be cracking down on drunk drivers before and during the Fourth of July.

The annual 'Booze It and Lose It' campaign is underway and runs through July 7.

Drivers will see law enforcement doing more checkpoints to make sure people are safe - and that drunk drivers are off the roads.

"Celebrating this time of year often involves alcohol, which can lead to additional impaired driving crashes,” Mark Ezzell, director of North Carolina Governor’s Highway Safety Program said. “Last year, 388 people died in crashes involving drivers who were under the influence of alcohol. That’s unacceptable."

NCDOT said there were more than 160 crashes involving alcohol during the holiday in 2023 - and four people died as a result.

The state is urging people to be safe this holiday, by having a designated driver or calling a taxi or rideshare service.
