BLOWING ROCK, N.C. — A 70-year-old man died while hiking on the Blue Ridge Parkway on Sunday, according to the National Forest Service.

The Blue Ridge Parkway Communications Center said it received a report of a lost hiker around 5:35 p.m. on Sunday. When Parkway law enforcement rangers and the Blowing Rock Fire Department arrived on scene, they met with the "hiker's companion," who told them that they left 70-year-old Freddie Morgan, Jr., on the trail and were concerned for his welfare.

Responders found Morgan shortly after 6 p.m., dead of what they said was a "medical emergency."

No additional details have been released at this time. The incident occurred near Milepost 296 on the Parkway.
