IREDELL COUNTY, N.C. -- A South Iredell High School teacher has been arrested and charged with engaging in a sexual relationship with a student.
An Iredell County Sheriff's Deputy on routine patrol spotted a suspicious vehicle parked at the end of a dead-end road in an undeveloped residential area on Wednesday. The deputy said a female was standing outside the vehicle, and a male was sitting inside the vehicle.
Investigators discovered the female, 37-year-old Julianna Ortiz Mills, was a teacher at South Iredell High School, while the male was a student at that school.
After interviewing the student at the Dove House Children's Advocacy Center, authorities charged Mills with one count each of sexual activity with a student by a teacher and felony taking indecent liberties with a student by a teacher.
The Sheriff's Office says the crimes did not take place on school property.
The student in this case is over the age of 16, but North Carolina law states it is a felony for a teacher or school employee to engage in a sexual relationship with a student from the same school, regardless of the student's age.
Mills was booked in to the Iredell County Jail under a $10,000 bond.
