GREENSBORO, N.C. — Election day is on Tuesday, Nov. 5. As many prepare to cast their ballots, voters in North Carolina are keeping voter registration deadlines and early voting top of mind.

Checking Your Voter Registration and Deadlines

The voter registration deadline in North Carolina is Friday, Oct. 11 at 5 p.m.

To check your voter registration status, you can use the voter search tool where you will need to enter both your first and last name.

To be eligible for voter registration in North Carolina, the North Carolina State Board of Elections said you must be a U.S. citizen and have lived in the county where you are registering to vote for at least 30 days before Election Day. Individuals must not be serving a felony sentence, including any period of probation, parole, or post-release supervision, and be at least 18 years old or will be by the date of the election.

There are two main ways to register to vote: online or in person at the DMV or through mail. Voters can submit an online voter registration application if they are existing NCDMV customers.

If voters plan to register through mail, they should fill out an NC Voter Registration Application and make sure they complete all required fields. Voters must print and sign their application and mail it to their county board of elections. Mail-in applications can be used to update your name, address, and party affiliation too.

Early Voting

The in-person early voting period begins on Thursday, Oct. 17, and ends on Saturday, Nov. 2. Locations for early voting can be found using the early voting sites tool.

If you miss the primary deadline to register to vote, you can use same-day registration during the early voting period. Same-day registration allows newly registered voters to immediately vote at the same site they registered at in person and is open to those who live in a county in NC but are not registered yet to vote.

All voters using same-day registration will be asked to show an acceptable form of photo identification, such as a driver’s license or student ID card if you are a college student.
