Gov. Roy Cooper talks possible VP nomination while visiting the Triad

Gov. Roy Cooper was in the Triad Tuesday where he fielded questions about the possibility of becoming a Vice Presidential pick for Kamala Harris.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Governor Roy Cooper visited Winston-Salem Tuesday to discuss a new initiative to tackle medical debt.

However, the big question many have is will he be the Vice Presidential nominee?

Cooper has put his full support behind Kamala Harris to become the Democratic Presidential Nominee. Also, he is reportedly on the shortlist for Harris' Vice Presidential pick if she earns the presidential nomination.

On Tuesday, WFMY News 2 asked him if he'd take the job.

"She has to win, she has to stop Trump and I want her to get the very best person she can get as vice president that being said, I respect her process," Cooper said. "I'm not going to comment on it any further than that."

Cooper went on to say he thinks Harris is the best equipped to beat former President Donald Trump.

Shortly after President Biden announced he wouldn't seek re-election he said he spoke with both Biden and Harris. While he wouldn't go into detail about his conversation with Harris, he said the pair talked about the importance of the upcoming election, and how he thinks North Carolina will flip blue. He had strong words for what a hypothetical Harris vs Trump election would look like.

“Well, [Trump] has an opponent who is a prosecutor. He's obviously a criminal. He has an opponent who has protected consumers. He's a con man. He has an opponent who was able to put women's reproductive freedom front and center while he has destroyed Roe v Wade," Cooper said. "This is a stark contrast. I believe that the people of North Carolina and people all over the country have had enough of Donald Trump. And I believe that Vice President Harris has been able to excite and unite not only Democrats but unaffiliated and Republicans who really don't want to see Trump elected as president again.”

He also wouldn't say if he had given Harris vetting materials to become the VP nominee. Instead saying that Harris has a long list of candidates to pick from.

"Clearly someone with a vision for America. I think there are a long list of Democrats who could do an amazing job in that position with her," Cooper said. " The thing is, she has extraordinary people to pick from, and I trust that she's going to make the right decision not only for her, but for the Democratic Party and for the country."

We expect to learn what the November ticket will look like at the Democratic National Convention in August.
