WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Students at Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) are number one for voter turnout so far among NC's 10 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), and they are outpacing the overall rate of turnout across the state.
Almost 62% of active registered voters with a WSSU campus residential address have already cast their ballot, according to an analysis by nonpartisan Common Cause North Carolina.
WSSU students are trending higher than the 49% turnout of all voters statewide at this point in the election. Through Oct. 31, more than 900 students with a campus residential address have voted and that number is likely to keep climbing as early voting continues through Saturday, Nov. 2, and Election Day on Tuesday, Nov. 5.
High voter turnout at WSSU is thanks to student organizations holding voter registration drives and educational events throughout the semester. Recently, they also organized a campus-wide march to the polls, where students walked together to cast their ballots at the on-campus early voting site.
