Elections: Will people know if you didn't vote?

Public record shows when a voter cast their ballot, whether they did it in-person, early, or absentee, but records don't show which candidates were picked.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — People have been showing off 'I Voted'  stickers. You'll see a lot more next Tuesday. But after Election Day, will people be able to find out if you voted or not?

The answer is, yes. The North Carolina State Board of Elections Voter Search helps you figure out your polling place, what your sample ballot looks like, and more. All the information is public, which is how third parties who send you fliers get your information.

There is your name, your address, how you're registered, and in what county. It is all public record and it has been for a long time.

If you scroll down on the page after your name and address,  you'll eventually see a list of the elections you've voted in-- this is an example. You can see if the voter placed the ballot in person, early or absentee.

What the voter history does not show you is who was voted for.  The candidates selected are not part of public records. No one will ever know who you voted for. unless you tell them. What they can see is if you voted or not.

Early voting ends in NC on Saturday, November 2, 2024 at 3 pm. Election Day is Tuesday, November 5, 2024. The polls are open from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm.
