NORTH CAROLINA, USA — The Associated Press has called the race for the U.S. House in North Carolina's 5th Congressional District.
Longtime incumbent, Republican Virginia Foxx, is set to serve an 11th term in the House. She ran against a new challenger, Democrat Chuck Hubbard.
Foxx will represent parts of Guilford, Forsyth, Rockingham, Stokes, Surry, Alleghany, Wilkes, and Watauga counties.
About Virginia Foxx
Born in New York, Foxx earned a bachelor's and master's degree from UNC-Chapel Hill before earning her doctorate at UNC-Greensboro. She served as a member of the Watauga County Board of Education and as a state senator in North Carolina before she was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives for the first time in 2004.
Foxx has won re-election nine times since then. She is currently the Chairwoman of the United States House of Representatives Committee on Education and the Workforce and a member of the House Oversight and Reform Committee. From 2013-16, she served as Secretary of the House Republican Conference.
Foxx also previously served as the Chairwoman of the House Subcommittee on Higher Education.
According to her website, Foxx ran on a platform of lower taxes, maintaining family values and better securing the US-Mexico border. She is also a staunch defender of Second Amendment rights.
