NORTH CAROLINA, USA — The battle for Governor in North Carolina is between the state's Lieutenant Governor and the Attorney General.
Mark Robinson
Republican Mark Robinson currently serves as North Carolina Lieutenant Governor.
A native of Greensboro and an Army beteran, Robinson was the ninth of ten children in a family that grew up in extreme poverty. He joined the Army Reserve after graduating from Grimsley High and went on to work at several furniture factoties in the Triad while spending time at both North Carolina A&T State University and UNC-Greensboro. He graduated from UNC-G in 2022 with a B.A. in history.
Robinson broke onto the political scene in 2018 after he delivered an impassioned address on gun rights to the Greensboro City Council. Robinson's remarks quickly went viral, and from there he began expanding his platform to address issues such as abortion, education and veterans' care.
In 2019, Robinson launched a campaign for Lieutenant Governor. He won the general election in 2020 against Democratic nominee Yvonne Holley, becoming North Carolina's first black Lieutenant Governor.
In September, CNN published an investigative story that alleged Robinson made numerous comments of a lewd and sexual nature on a pornography forum several years ago. Among the inflammatory posts, CNN alleges Robinson at one point referred to himself as a "black NAZI."
Josh Stein
Democrat Josh Stein currently serves as North Carolina's Attorney General.
Born in Washington, D.C., Stein moved along with his family to North Carolina at an early age. He was first elected back in 2008 as a representative for North Carolina's 16th Senate District. He eventually left the state senate after winning the Democratic nomination for Attorney General in 2016.
Stein became the first Jewish person to win a statewide election in North Carolina when he defeated Republican Buck Newton in the 2016 race for Attorney General. He was re-elected in 2020 after coming up victorious against Republican Jim O'Neill.
As part of his work since being elected as Attorney General, Stein has worked to eliminate the backlog of untested sexual assault kits in North Carolina. He also led a bipartisan effort of state Attorneys General to negotiate a settlement framework with drug companies over the opioid epidemic.
Most recently, Stein and a group of 11 other Attorneys General sued TikTok, alleging that parent company ByteDance Ltd. "designed its app to be addictive while misrepresenting the mental, emotional and physical risks the app posed to young users."
